As long as I live…

As long as I live with a healthy flourish,
I shall serve Love, the mighty Lord,
In deed and word, in song and chord.
For many days I have languished,
My mourning's done, I'm sad no more—
My soulmate's love lies unvanquished.
In our alliance
We hold reliance;
Her heart's my own,
My heart is sewn:
No more sadness,
Forever gladness,
Since our Love is enough alone.

When I wish to write, to preserve her name,
To serve her honour, and express
My love in her every success,
The envious whisper in vain—
For our Love can never be less:
As much or more as the wind sustains.
Despite temptations,
And life's frustrations,
My love's unswerved,
I'll sing unnerved:
She is the first,
And will be the last,
That I have served, and will ever serve.

Clement Marot (1497-1544)
